ServSafe Food Handler Full-Length Practice Test

Ten practice tests built to run very close to the real assessment: 40 questions, every one of them scored, no time limit, and a practice pass at 30 out of 40. Choose California, Texas, Utah or the General edition at purchase and the paper swaps in that state's own requirements.

  • 40Questions
  • NoTime limit
  • 30/40To pass
  • 400Questions total
  • Every question counts — 40 scored items, no pilot questions, and nothing deducted for a wrong answer
  • Four real editions. California, Texas and Utah carry that state's own requirements; everywhere else gets the General edition
  • 64 questions behind every test: 32 that all four editions share, plus 8 written for each one
  • Score for all five content areas, with the food-safety rule behind every answer written out
  • Downloadable PDF report you can keep, print, or work through with a supervisor
  • Study your way. No proctor, no lockdown, notes open if you want, because the real assessment isn't proctored either

The ServSafe Food Handler assessment is 40 questions with no time limit. You need at least 75% to earn the Certificate of Achievement, which works out to 30 correct answers out of 40. It's non-proctored, and you get three attempts before you have to buy the course again.

Every test here follows that shape: 40 questions delivered one after another, no clock, and a practice pass at 30. All 40 are scored, so there are no pilot items sitting in the paper the way there are on the Manager exam. Four options per question, one right answer, nothing deducted for a wrong guess.

The five content areas are weighted evenly at 8 questions each: Basic Food Safety, Personal Hygiene, Cross-Contamination and Allergens, Time and Temperature, Cleaning and Sanitation. Thirty topics sit underneath them, all written against the 6th Edition and the 2022 FDA Food Code. Every set is built to the same blueprint, so a score on test 2 and a score on test 9 measure the same thing.

Because some jurisdictions run their own rules, each test holds 64 questions rather than 40: 32 that every edition shares, plus 8 written for each of California, Texas, Utah and General. Pick your edition at purchase and you sit that state's 40. The four papers genuinely differ.

Each attempt ends with your score against 30, a breakdown across all five areas, a full review with an explanation on every question, a PDF report you can download and a summary emailed to you. Ten sets, 400 questions in total. $1 each, $3 for five, $5 for all ten.

State editions

Practice against your state's version

ServSafe notes that some jurisdictions have their own regulations, and the required passing score can vary. Rather than pretend one paper fits everywhere, you choose an edition at purchase and the questions follow it.

  • 64Questions written for every test, against the 40 you actually sit.
  • 32Shared by all four editions. The food-safety fundamentals nobody's state changes.
  • 8Written specifically for each edition, carrying that jurisdiction's own requirements.
CA

California

Eight questions drawn from California's own food handler requirements, sitting alongside the 32 shared ones. Nothing on the day comes from a version you never practised.

TX

Texas

Texas requirements in the state-specific eight, spread across the same five content areas with the emphasis where Texas puts it.

UT

Utah

Utah's own rules in the state-specific eight, written to the same standard as the shared bank rather than bolted on.

GEN

General

A full edition in its own right, not a fallback. Pick this if your state doesn't run its own food handler programme.

Your edition locks in once you choose it, so a score can't be nudged upward by reselecting mid-pack, and it shows on your dashboard beside each result so you can always confirm which version you sat. If you're unsure which applies to you, your local health department is the authority, not us.

Inside a test

Built to behave like the real assessment

A practice test earns its keep when nothing about the real assessment surprises you afterwards. The count, the controls and the pass standard all line up.

01

40 questions, no clock

The real assessment isn't timed and neither is this. Work at the pace you'd actually use, rather than rehearsing under pressure that won't be there.

02

Every question is scored

All 40 count toward your result. No pilot items, no unmarked questions quietly excluded from the total, so the number you see is the number you earned.

03

No negative marking

Four options, one correct answer, nothing taken off for getting it wrong. A blank and a wrong answer score the same, so never leave one empty.

04

Eight questions per content area

The five areas are weighted evenly, eight questions each. Every set uses the same split, which is what makes comparing two of your scores meaningful.

05

Your edition, not a generic paper

Choose California, Texas, Utah or General and eight of the forty come from that jurisdiction's own requirements. The other 32 are shared across all four.

06

Relaxed conditions, on purpose

No agreement screen, no tab-switch limits, no copy-paste restrictions. The real Food Handler assessment isn't proctored, so locking your browser down would rehearse conditions you'll never meet. Keep your notes open if you want.

07

Full-screen interface

The test takes over the window. No sidebar, no menu, no half-read notification pulling your attention off question 23.

08

Skip, flag, change your mind

Leave a question and come back. Flag anything you're unsure of. Change an answer as many times as you like right up until you submit.

09

Navigator with filters

All 40 questions in one grid, filtered by answered, unanswered or flagged. Finding the three you were worried about takes a tap, not a scroll.

10

Review screen before submitting

Nothing goes in until you've seen what's blank and what's still flagged. Losing marks to questions you meant to return to is an avoidable way to fail.

11

Resume an interrupted attempt

Progress saves as you work. A closed tab, a dead battery or a shift starting doesn't cost you the attempt. It's waiting where you left it.

12

Order shuffles on each delivery

Questions arrive in a different order every attempt, so you're recalling the rule rather than remembering that the answer sat third from the top.

13

A planned difficulty mix

Each set has a deliberate spread of easy, medium and hard questions. All-hard would be discouraging and would tell you nothing useful about readiness.

14

Workplace scenarios

Questions put you on a shift and ask what you should do, rather than asking you to recite a definition. That's the form the real thing takes too.

15

Retake as often as you like

The real assessment gives you three attempts. A test you've bought here has no such limit, which is rather the point of practising before it counts.

After you submit

The report is the part that teaches

A score on its own tells you almost nothing you can act on. What you need is which rule you got wrong and which area it came from.

Example result · Texas edition

85% · Correct 34 · Wrong 5 · Unanswered 1
Practice pass
0Pass line 3040

Marked the way the real assessment marks it: 30 correct out of 40 is the standard, and anything below shows as a practice fail so you know before it counts.

Score by content area
Basic food safety7/8
Personal hygiene8/8
Cross-contamination and allergens6/8
Time and temperature5/8
Cleaning and sanitation8/8

This is what turns a score into a study plan. Here the cooling and holding temperatures are the problem and everything else is solid.

  • Downloadable PDF reportEvery question, the answer you gave, the correct one and the explanation, as a file you can keep or print.
  • Summary by emailYour result is sent to your inbox after each attempt, so nothing is lost when you close the tab.
  • Dashboard, edition and percentileEvery past attempt with its score and which edition you sat, plus where you stand against other candidates if that's switched on.

The full answer review opens as soon as you submit, and every question carries a written explanation of the food-safety rule behind it. Read the ones you guessed correctly too. A lucky guess and a solid answer look identical on a score report and completely different on the day.

Coverage

What the questions cover

Five content areas, eight questions each, 30 topics between them, written against the 6th Edition and the 2022 FDA Food Code. Time and temperature runs through more of them than people expect.

41°F / 5°CCold holding
The danger zoneWhere bacteria grow fastest
135°F / 57°CHot holding

Basic food safety

8 of 40 · 20%

How food becomes unsafe, what foodborne illness is, and where a food handler fits into preventing it.

Personal hygiene

8 of 40 · 20%

Handwashing, gloves, work attire, jewellery, and when to tell a manager you're unwell instead of working through it.

Cross-contamination and allergens

8 of 40 · 20%

Keeping raw away from ready-to-eat, storage order, separate equipment, and handling an allergen request properly.

Time and temperature

8 of 40 · 20%

The danger zone, cooking temperatures, cooling, reheating, and holding food hot or cold on a service line.

Cleaning and sanitation

8 of 40 · 20%

The difference between cleaning and sanitising, sanitiser strength and contact time, and cleaning as you go.

Scenario format

30 topics in all

Most questions describe a situation on a shift and ask what you should do. Two answers usually look reasonable, which is the part that catches people out.

Comparison

Food Handler or Manager?

People often land on the wrong one. They're different credentials for different jobs, and the exams barely resemble each other.

Questions

Before you buy

How many questions are on the ServSafe Food Handler assessment?

Forty multiple-choice questions, and every one of them is scored. It's non-proctored, and there's no time limit.

What score do you need to pass?

At least 75%, which is 30 correct out of 40. That comes from the official ServSafe Food Handler program page. Some jurisdictions set their own regulations and the required score can vary, so check locally if your state runs its own programme.

Is the Food Handler assessment timed?

No. ServSafe states the assessment has no time limit, and these practice tests don't impose one either. Working at your own pace is the realistic rehearsal.

Is there negative marking?

No. Each question has four options and one correct answer, and a wrong answer scores exactly what a blank one scores. There's never a reason to leave a question unanswered.

How many attempts do you get at the real assessment?

Three. If you don't pass within those three attempts, you have to buy the course again before you can try once more, which is a decent reason to practise properly first. The practice tests here have no attempt limit.

What content areas do the questions cover?

All five Food Handler areas, evenly weighted at eight questions each: basic food safety, personal hygiene, cross-contamination and allergens, time and temperature, and cleaning and sanitation. Thirty topics sit underneath those five, and every test spreads across all of them rather than clustering on one.

Which edition are the questions written to?

The 6th Edition and the 2022 FDA Food Code. Nothing here comes from a retired version, which matters most on the temperature and date-marking questions where the numbers have moved over the years.

What does the state edition actually change?

Eight of the forty questions. Each test holds 64 questions in total: 32 that all four editions share, plus 8 written for California, 8 for Texas, 8 for Utah and 8 for General. Pick your edition at purchase and you sit the 32 shared questions plus that state's 8. The four papers really are different, rather than one paper with a label on it.

Which state option should I choose?

Whichever state you'll be working in. If your state doesn't run its own food handler programme, pick General, which is a complete edition in its own right and not a stripped-down version. Your local health department is the authority on which applies to you.

Can I change my edition after buying?

No. Your choice locks in at purchase and stays attached to the test, so a score can't be improved by reselecting and sitting an easier version. The edition you sat is shown beside every result on your dashboard.

How close are these to the real assessment?

Very close on everything measurable: 40 questions all scored, no time limit, the same 30-out-of-40 pass standard, four options with one right answer, no negative marking, and the same style of workplace scenario question. The controls match too, so you can skip, flag, navigate, review, then submit.

Why don't these tests lock down the browser?

Because the real Food Handler assessment isn't proctored. There's no agreement screen, no tab-switch limit and no copy-paste restriction here, and that's a deliberate choice rather than something missing. Rehearsing under restrictions you'll never face teaches you nothing. Our Manager practice tests do enforce those restrictions, because the Manager exam is proctored.

What does the result analysis show?

Your score against the 30-out-of-40 standard with a pass or fail, a correct, wrong and unanswered breakdown, and your score in each of the five content areas out of 8. That last part is what tells you where the next study session goes.

Can I download my results?

Yes. Every completed attempt produces a PDF report with all 40 questions, your answers, the correct answers and the explanations. Useful for revising away from a screen or going through it with a supervisor.

Do I get my results by email?

Yes. A summary is emailed after each attempt, and the full result stays in My Account so you can come back to it.

Can I see my past results?

All completed results live in My Account, each one showing its score and which edition you sat. With a pack, every test is managed from that one dashboard, so you can compare attempts and see whether your score is actually moving. Your order history and receipts are there too.

Can I see how I compare with other candidates?

Yes, if you switch the leaderboard on. Your result then comes with a percentile alongside it, which is a useful sanity check when 34 out of 40 feels good but you're not sure whether it should.

Do I have to finish a test in one go?

No. Progress saves as you work, so an in-progress attempt can be resumed. Saved progress also protects an active attempt if something interrupts you mid-test.

Can I retake a test I've bought?

As often as you like, and the question order is randomised on every attempt, so a retake isn't the same page in the same sequence. You end up recalling the rule instead of the position.

Do questions repeat between the ten tests?

Each of the ten sets is its own test, giving you 400 questions in total across the pack of ten and 200 across the pack of five.

Where do the questions come from?

They're written independently, to the published Food Handler content areas and the 2022 FDA Food Code. No live assessment content is reproduced here. Nobody legitimately sells that, and memorising a dump stops working the moment the wording changes.

Does this replace the official ServSafe Food Handler course?

No. The certificate still comes from completing the official ServSafe course and passing its assessment. These are study materials for that, not a route to the certificate itself.

What's the difference between Food Handler and Manager?

Food Handler is the entry-level certificate for staff: 40 questions, untimed, no proctor. Manager is the higher credential for the person in charge, at 90 questions in two hours with a proctor. If you need that one, we have full-length Manager practice tests as well.

What's the difference between the single test and the packs?

The number of tests and the price per test. One is $1. Five cost $3, which is 60¢ each. All ten cost $5, which is 50¢ each. Every set is identical in length, weighting, format, controls and reporting.

How do I pay, and do I need an account?

Pay with PayPal, or by debit or credit card through Razorpay, in US dollars. You'll confirm your email with a code we send, which creates the My Account area your tests, results and receipts sit in. The site runs ad-free once you've bought.

Ten tests. 400 questions. Five dollars.

Untimed the way the real assessment is untimed, matched to your state's edition, with a score in every content area, a PDF report and your results emailed after each attempt.
