ServSafe Alcohol Primary Practice Test
Fourteen free practice tests covering alcohol law, intoxication prevention, ID checks and difficult service situations. Each set is 25 questions, untimed, with instant scoring and a downloadable PDF showing every question, the answer you gave, the correct one and why.
The ServSafe Alcohol Primary exam is 40 questions, untimed, and you pass at 75% — that's 30 correct out of 40. The standard online version doesn't need a proctor, and every one of the 40 questions is scored.
Check that against whatever else you're reading. A number of prep sites publish 80% for Primary, which is the Advanced threshold, or impose a 60-minute time limit that doesn't exist on this exam. Advanced is a different exam entirely: 70 questions, 80%, and proctored.
Every question is single-answer multiple choice with four options, and nothing is deducted for a wrong one. A blank answer and a wrong answer score the same, so there's never a reason to leave one empty.
Mixed Set — ServSafe Alcohol Primary Practice Tests
Balanced sets across the full Primary content structure. Each is 25 questions with an instant score card and a downloadable PDF carrying the question, your answer, the correct answer and the rationale, so you can see which of the four areas needs work.
The real exam is 40 questions, and a retest costs $18.
A 25-question set tells you whether you know a rule. It doesn't tell you whether you'd clear 30 out of 40 on the day. The full-length tests run the real shape: 40 scored questions, untimed, marked at the correct 75%, with all four content areas in the same proportion the exam uses.
Twelve questions on alcohol law, 10 on intoxication, 10 on difficult situations, 8 on checking ID, across all 27 topics. Your result comes back with a score in each of the four, so you know which one would have cost you the pass.

Domain Wise — ServSafe Alcohol Primary Mock Tests
Sharpen one area until the right call stops needing thought. Each domain test is 25 questions with a score card and a downloadable PDF review. The badge on each card shows how many of the 40 exam questions that area carries, so you can see which drills repay the time.
Strong on all four? Put them back together.
Handling one topic and making 40 judgement calls in a row are different skills. A full-length test covers all four areas in the real proportion, then shows your score by area so you know which one would have cost you the pass.
Free Tests or Full-Length Simulations?
Both belong in a study plan. They do different jobs, and the order matters more than most people think.

About the ServSafe Alcohol Primary Exam
Primary tests the basic knowledge needed for responsible alcohol service, across four areas: alcohol law and your responsibility, recognising and preventing intoxication, checking identification, and handling difficult situations.
What the credential covers
Primary is aimed at front-of-house staff: bartenders, servers, hosts, bussers, valets, door staff and similar roles. The current online exam is 40 questions, all of them scored.
A passing score is 75%, meaning at least 30 of 40 correct. The National Restaurant Association recognises ServSafe Alcohol certificates for three years, though state or employer rules may set different renewal timelines.
Exam Format
Level: Primary is the basic option in the ServSafe Alcohol program. Official materials describe it as a nonsecured exam testing basic knowledge, sold online as a 40-question exam.
Question style: single-answer multiple choice with four options, every question scored, with no negative marking for a wrong answer.
Proctor: not required for the standard online Primary bundle.
State rules: some states have separate or supplemental alcohol training requirements, so what you need can depend on where you work.
Our full-length practice tests use the same 40-question format and the same 75% standard.
Training & Exam Options
ServSafe Alcohol training runs online and in classrooms, and you choose Primary or the Advanced proctored exam based on your role and any state requirement.
Online bundle: the current Primary course and exam bundle is a mobile-enabled four-hour course with a bookmark feature, so you can pick up where you stopped before taking the exam.
Check first: a few states either mandate the Advanced exam or run their own approved programme, and the ServSafe regulatory pages list which.
Languages
The current online Primary course and exam bundle is offered in English and Spanish. ServSafe notes that Alcohol exams are available online in English and Spanish in select states, with print options in English and Spanish/English.
If your state requires its own version, check the ServSafe Alcohol regulatory information before buying materials or booking training.
Scheduling & Delivery
There's nothing to schedule, since the Primary exam isn't proctored. You launch it with the access code included in your purchase once the course is done, and results come back immediately.
Course window: one year from purchase to start the course, then 90 days from the start date to finish it. Expired online courses can't be extended.
Certificate: view or print it from your ServSafe account after you pass.
Fees, Scheduling & Retakes
ServSafe lists official online options for the standard Primary bundle and a separate retest exam. State-specific products differ, so confirm the right version for your location first.
| Official Product | What It Includes | Listed Price |
|---|---|---|
| ServSafe Alcohol Online Course and Primary Exam — 3rd Edition | Four-hour online course, exam access code, and certificate on passing | $30.00 |
| SSA Primary RETEST Exam | Single online retest access code for eligible Primary learners | $18.00 |
Retake and access notes
The retest product is for learners who scored below 75% on the online course and exam. If you haven't completed the online Primary course, the system won't let you take the retest-only exam.
Unused online courses stay valid for one year from purchase. Once started, the course must be finished within 90 days, and expired courses can't be extended.
A retest is $18. Finding out first is cheaper.
Scoring 29 out of 40 costs you another access code and another sitting. Rehearsing the full 40-question format first tells you whether you're above the line while it still costs nothing to be wrong.
How to Prepare for the Exam
Start broad, find the decisions you get wrong, then drill those. Alcohol Primary rewards judgement more than recall, so practice should be about choices rather than facts.
Study Tips
Take a mixed test first. Your score report shows whether you're losing marks on law, intoxication signs, ID checks or difficult guests, and you can't sensibly pick a weak area before you have one.
Then follow the numbers. Alcohol law is 12 of the 40 questions, nearly a third of the exam on its own. Intoxication and difficult situations take 10 each, and checking ID takes 8.
Focus on the scenarios rather than the facts. The exam is less about isolated definitions than about picking the safest, most legally sound action while you're standing behind the bar with someone waiting.
Repeat the domain tests until refusal steps, carding procedure and warning signs feel automatic, because on shift you won't have time to reason them out.
Finish with a full run: sit at least one full-length 40-question test before you use your exam access code.
Exam-Day Tips
Ask what the server should do first. The best answer usually protects the guest, the public and the operation at once, not just one of the three.
Watch the helpful-sounding options. An answer can look accommodating and still let risky service continue, which is exactly the trap being set.
Don't rush. The exam isn't timed, whatever other sites claim, and nothing is deducted for a wrong answer, so answer every question rather than leaving one blank.
Re-read the ID and refusal questions: these are where a hurried choice turns a nearly right answer into a wrong one.
ServSafe Alcohol Primary Exam Blueprint
ServSafe publishes the four content areas but not an official percentage split. Our full-length tests use the counts in the right-hand column across 27 topics. Treat that column as our blueprint rather than an official figure.
| Domain | What to Study | On our 40-Q tests |
|---|---|---|
| Alcohol Law and Your Responsibility | Service laws, liability, house policy, the server's duties, and the risks of unsafe or illegal service. | 12 questions |
| Recognizing and Preventing Intoxication | Signs of intoxication, what affects BAC, slowing service, refusal decisions and early intervention. | 10 questions |
| Handling Difficult Situations | Refusing service, de-escalation, involving managers or security, guest safety, transport and incident response. | 10 questions |
| Checking Identification | Acceptable ID, verifying age, spotting fake or altered cards, and consistent carding procedure. | 8 questions |
