Specialty Tracks: Allergens & Workplace

Mastering the Allergens Exam

Certain states mandate this specific training to prevent deadly cross-contact. You'll be tested on identifying the major food allergens, communicating safely with the guest, preventing cross-contact during prep, and reading food labels correctly.

Understanding the Workplace Modules

This isn't a traditional single exam, but a suite of HR and safety training. Use our practice questions to review Sexual Harassment Prevention, Unconscious Bias, De-Escalation, and Active Threat Response to ensure a safe environment for everyone.

The Best Strategy to Pass Your Exam

Don't rely on simply reading the book. A strategic practice plan drastically improves your chances of passing on your first attempt.

1. Find Your Baseline

Before you start studying, take one of the Full Exam Simulations completely cold. Don't worry about your score—this will immediately highlight which specific topics you are weak in and save you hours of studying material you already know.

Once you review your incorrect answers, switch entirely to the Focused Topic Drills. If you missed questions on the "Danger Zone," take the Time and Temperature drill until you are scoring perfectly.

2. Master the Exam Wording

The actual ServSafe exam is famous for tricky wording. Pay very close attention when questions use words like "best," "most likely," or "first." Small wording changes dictate the correct answer.

Also, memorize your numbers! TCS food danger zones (41°F to 135°F), cooling times (2 hours to 70°F, 4 hours to 41°F), and minimal internal cooking temperatures are guaranteed to be tested.

Frequently Asked Questions to Help You Prepare

1. What is ServSafe and why do I need it? +
ServSafe is a food safety training program required by most states and counties. Earning your certificate proves to health inspectors and employers that you know how to safely handle food and prevent foodborne illnesses.
2. Will my ServSafe certification be accepted in my state? +
Almost certainly! ServSafe is nationally recognized and accepted in more jurisdictions than any other food safety program. The Manager certification is fully accredited by ANSI.
3. How long is my certification good for? +
ServSafe Manager is valid for 5 years. Food Handler, Alcohol, and Allergens certificates are generally valid for 3 years. Always double-check with your employer, as some local health departments require renewals more frequently.
4. What do I do if my certification expires? +
If your certification expires, you must retake the exam (and sometimes the course, depending on your local laws) to get a new, valid certificate. Using our practice tests is a great way to quickly refresh your memory before renewing!
5. Can I take my exam online from home? +
Yes! The Food Handler, Alcohol Primary, and Allergens exams can be taken online without a proctor. The Manager exam can also be taken online from home, but it must be monitored by a registered remote proctor (like ProctorU).
6. Should I take the Manager or Food Handler exam? +
If you are a shift leader, head chef, PIC (Person-In-Charge), or owner, you need the Manager exam. If you are a line cook, server, dishwasher, or general front-line employee, you likely only need the Food Handler certificate.
7. How many questions will I face on the Manager exam? +
You will answer 90 multiple-choice questions. However, only 80 of them actually count toward your score. The other 10 are "pilot" questions being tested for future exams. Treat every question like it counts!
8. What score do I need to pass the Manager exam? +
You need to score at least a 70% to pass and earn your Food Protection Manager Certification.
9. How much time will I have to take the Manager exam? +
You are given a maximum of 2 hours. Most well-prepared students finish in about 60 to 90 minutes. Don't rush; read every word of the question carefully.
10. What happens if I fail the Manager exam? Can I retake it? +
Yes! You can retest once immediately. If you fail a second time, you are required to wait 60 days before your third attempt. You are allowed 4 attempts within a 12-month window. Use our practice tests before paying for a retake!
11. How much should I expect to pay for the Manager certification? +
If you only need an exam voucher (to test with a proctor), it costs between $36 and $99. If you want the official online course bundled with the exam, expect to pay around $150.
12. Do I have to go to a testing center for the Food Handler exam? +
No! The Food Handler exam is an open-book, non-proctored online test. You can take it on your own computer from the comfort of your home.
13. How long is the Food Handler exam? +
The exam is only 40 multiple-choice questions long, and it is completely untimed.
14. What is a passing grade for the Food Handler exam? +
You must score a 75% or higher. This means you need to answer at least 30 out of the 40 questions correctly to pass.
15. How much does it cost to take the Food Handler course? +
It is very affordable! The standard online ServSafe Food Handler course and exam bundle typically costs just $15.00.
16. Which Alcohol exam should I take: Primary or Advanced? +
Always check with your employer. The Primary exam is non-proctored and works for most states. The Advanced exam is proctored, longer, and is strictly required in states/counties with rigorous liquor laws.
17. What score do I need to pass the ServSafe Alcohol exams? +
You need a 75% to pass the Primary exam, but you will need an 80% to pass the proctored Advanced exam.
18. How many questions will I have to answer on the Alcohol exams? +
The Primary exam is 40 questions long, while the Advanced proctored exam is 60 questions long. Both are untimed.
19. Is the Allergens certification actually legally required? +
In several states, yes. For example, Massachusetts, Michigan, and Rhode Island have laws specifically mandating certified allergen training. If your state requires it, our practice tests will get you ready!
20. How much time should I set aside for the Allergens course? +
The official online course and assessment combined will usually take you about 90 minutes to complete.
21. What will I be tested on in the Workplace program? +
The Workplace exams focus heavily on staff safety and HR. You'll need to understand Sexual Harassment Prevention, Unconscious Bias, De-Escalation tactics, and how to respond to Active Threats.
22. How do I become a Registered ServSafe Proctor? +
You'll need to complete the online ServSafe Proctor Tutorial, pass the Proctor Quiz (which you can practice for above!), and submit an application promising to uphold their strict exam security standards.
23. What is the difference between an Instructor and a Proctor? +
An Instructor teaches the material to students. A Proctor is essentially the "security guard" who ensures the exam is taken fairly without cheating. Many professionals choose to become certified as both!
24. Does it cost money to register as a Proctor? +
No! As long as you meet the professional requirements and pass the tutorial/quiz, becoming a Registered ServSafe Proctor is free.
25. Are the exams available in languages other than English? +
Yes. The ServSafe Manager exam is also offered in Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and French Canadian. The Food Handler course is available in Spanish, Simplified Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese.
